Caring for the Cancer Patient: What Every Practitioner Should Know

This continuing education course is designed for occupational therapy
practitioners who provide care to individuals currently undergoing or who have
previously completed cancer treatment. The course will review the most common
cancer treatment modalities and discuss associated guidelines, precautions, and
restrictions relevant to occupational therapy practice. Participants will learn to
identify common functional deficits experienced by cancer survivors and gain
foundational knowledge of cancer-related lymphedema principles essential for
safe and effective patient management.

Learning Objectives:
1.      Describe the fundamentals of cancer management and common treatment options used in patient care.
2.      Identify potential physical, cognitive, and functional deficits experienced by patients following cancer treatment.
3.      Recognize risk factors for cancer-related lymphedema and apply basic lymphedema principles in occupational therapy practice.


Course Instructors


Alyssa Formyduval, OTD, MS, OTR/L, CSRS, is an Occupational Therapist with extensive experience treating individuals with cancer across a variety of clinical settings. In 2019, she became certified in cancer care management and played a key role in developing an oncology rehabilitation service line within her hospital system. Since that time, Dr. Formyduval has provided comprehensive oncology rehabilitation services across the cancer care continuum and has educated and mentored clinicians in the management of patients with cancer. She currently serves as a Clinical Assistant Faculty member in Valparaiso University’s entry-level Doctor of Occupational Therapy (OTD) program, where she contributes to foundational cancer care education for future occupational therapists.


Dr. Jazmine Mack, OTD, OTR/L, CLT, CWS, is a Clinical Specialist Occupational Therapist with advanced expertise in oncology rehabilitation, lymphedema, and wound management. She practices in an outpatient hospital setting, where she also serves as a clinical supervisor for inpatient services, wound care, lymphedema, and oncology rehabilitation programs. Dr. Mack is a Part-Time Associate Professor at Chicago State University and a Clinical Instructor with the Academy of Lymphatic Studies. She is a PORi-Certified Oncology Rehabilitation Therapist and Certified Lymphedema and Wound Therapist, with research and clinical interests focused on advancing education and improving outcomes for individuals affected by cancer and lymphatic disorders.
