  Children and Youth SIS Networking & Mentoring Session

  CYSIS Virtual Event December 7,  2025 from 7:30-8:30 pm EST Cost: Free to IOTA members, $10 for non-members  IOTA CEUs = 1 This event will provide time for networking and mentoring with other pediatric OT practitioners. Breakout rooms will be created for school-based practice, early intervention, and hospital/clinic based practice so that practitioners may have discussions with peers who share their practice area. Discussion questions will be provided and responses will be collected. The CYSIS co-chairs are interested to learn how IOTA can best serve Indiana occupational therapy practitioners serving children and youth. At the end of this presentation participants will be able to:  Describe the current strengths and areas for growth for OT for children and youth in Indiana.  Identify at least one strategy for improving or enhancing OT practice for children and youth in Indiana.  A zoom link will be shared with those that register. • Upper Extremity Amputations & Prosthetics for the Occupational Therapy Practitioner

  Description of the course:
  

  This 2-hour course will address osseointegration for patients with upper limb loss, including information about surgical techniques and protocols. Occupational therapy assessment and interventions will be discussed as well as goal writing and expected outcomes. Basic troubleshooting will also be reviewed. Additionally, 2 case studies will be presented at the thumb level for a bone-anchored prosthesis.

  
  

  Learning Objectives

  1. Participant will be able to describe the fundamentals of osseointegration and explain how a bone-anchored device differs from a traditional socket-based device

  2. Participant will be able to identify key occupational therapy considerations in the rehab process following the implantation of a bone anchored device

  3. Participant will be able to analyze two clinical case studies at the thumb level to identify functional outcomes, rehabilitation challenges and patient-specific factors that influence successful integration of a bone-anchored thumb prosthesis into daily life

  
  

  Presenter: Brooke O'Steen

  Brooke O’Steen is an Occupational Therapist with over 20 years of experience, including 13 years in the prosthetics industry. She is passionate about helping people regain function, independence and confidence through creative problem-solving and patient-centered care. When she is not working in prosthetics, or providing education, she’s just like everyone else-trying to figure out what’s for dinner, keeping up with life’s never-ending to-do list, and cleaning toilets. Because no matter how many years of clinical experience you have, no body gets a free pass on laundry!

• From Clinic to Community: Driver Rehabilitation in Occupational Therapy

  Driving is a complex instrumental activity of daily living that requires the integration of visual, cognitive, perceptual, motor, and behavioral skills. Although occupational therapists routinely assess many of these underlying abilities, recognizing how clinical findings translate to real-world driving performance can be challenging. This course introduces occupational therapists to driver rehabilitation as a specialized area of occupational therapy practice. Participants will explore the role of the Certified Driver Rehabilitation Specialist (CDRS), identify clinical findings that may warrant a referral for a comprehensive driving evaluation, and learn about the components of driver evaluation and rehabilitation.
  

  
  

  Learning Objectives:

  1. Identify at least three visual, cognitive, perceptual, or motor impairments that may affect driving safety and warrant consideration of a comprehensive driving evaluation.

  2. Describe the primary components of a comprehensive driver rehabilitation evaluation, including clinical assessment, behind-the-wheel evaluation when indicated, and individualized recommendations.

  3. Recognize at least three clinical situations in which referral to a Certified Driver Rehabilitation Specialist (CDRS) may be appropriate, including consideration of adaptive equipment, driver retraining, or alternative transportation options.

  Kelsey Wilson, MS, OTR, CDRS

  Kelsey is an occupational therapist and Director of Driver Rehabilitation Services at Easterseals Rehabilitation Center. Licensed as an occupational therapist since 2018, she has clinical experience in occupational therapy and specialized practice in driver rehabilitation. In her current role, she oversees driver rehabilitation services and provides direct clinical care. Her work includes driver evaluations, driver training, adaptive equipment considerations, and education to support safe and independent community mobility. She is passionate about helping occupational therapists recognize the relationship between functional performance and driving safety and understand the role of specialized driver rehabilitation services in client-centered care.
