    IOTA MHSIS Journal Club Announcement
March Journal Club: Understanding Sensory Modulation in Mental Health Practice

The Indiana Occupational Therapy Association – Mental Health Special Interest Section (IOTA MHSIS) invites you to our March Journal Club exploring the concept of sensory modulation and its application in occupational therapy practice.

    Date: March 24, 2026
    Time: 7:00 PM (ET)
    Format: Virtual Journal Club Discussion

    Featured Article:
Brown, A., Tse, T., & Fortune, T. (2019). Defining sensory modulation: A review of the concept and a contemporary definition for application by occupational therapists. Scandinavian Journal of Occupational Therapy, 26(7), 515–523.
    https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/30457401/

    What We’ll Discuss:

This article critically reviews how sensory modulation has been defined in the literature and proposes a contemporary definition to guide occupational therapy practice. During this session, we will:

    • Clarify what sensory modulation is — and what it is not

    • Examine how inconsistent definitions have impacted practice and research

    • Explore how a clear definition strengthens OT’s role in mental health

    • Discuss clinical implications across settings and across the lifespan

    • Connect sensory modulation theory to real-world mental health intervention

    Who Should Attend:

    • OT practitioners

    • OT and OTA students

    • Educators

    • Emerging professionals

    • Anyone interested in strengthening their understanding of sensory-informed OT practice

Join us for a supportive, engaging conversation and connect with colleagues who are passionate about advancing mental health occupational therapy in Indiana.

    Brief Overview
This course reviews the persistent functional impact of chronic ischemic stroke and the neuroplasticity principles required to drive meaningful upper-extremity recovery. Learners will explore why traditional rehabilitation often fails to deliver sufficient repetitions for cortical change and how Paired Vagus Nerve Stimulation (VNS) enhances the effectiveness of task-specific practice. The session integrates current evidence, FDA-approved indications, treatment design principles, and real-world clinical implementation strategies for Vivistim® Paired VNS™ Therapy.

    Learning Objectives
After completing this course, participants will be able to:
    - Explain the role of neuroplasticity and high-repetition, task-specific practice in upper-limb motor recovery after chronic ischemic stroke.
    - Describe the mechanism of action, FDA-approved indication, and clinical evidence supporting Paired VNS Therapy.
    - Apply core VNS therapy principles (active movement, salience, task specificity, and repetition) to treatment planning and patient selection in clinical practice.
